Remembering Writer Jean-Francois Revel (1924-2006)
French philosopher, journalist, and academic, Jean-Francois Revel, died in Paris on April 30th. He was 82. A member of the prestigious Academie Francaise, Revel authored over 30 books on subjects ranging from cooking to Marxism, and was perhaps best known for his controversial pro-American politics. In the ‘50s, Revel left a career in academia to devote himself to journalism. His first book, Why Philosophers, a critique of Marxism, was published in 1957. Working for many years as an editor and literary advisor, Revel became the director of the weekly magazine L'Express in 1978, and worked as a radio commentator throughout the '90s. In 1997, he was appointed as an immortel to the Academie Francaise, France's most elite cultural institution.
