In October 2007, His Holiness the Dalai Lama appeared to a sold-out crowd at Radio City Music Hall to discuss the ways that individuals can best cultivate virtuous qualities within themselves to bring about peace and prosperity in today’s world. National Geographic recorded this message imbued with the basic tenets of Buddhism and is happy to present this historic event on DVD, now available for the first time in spectacular high-definition.

“Peace and Prosperity” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April and was an official selection of the Mountainfilm in Telluride Festival. In “Peace and Prosperity”, His Holiness the Dalai Lama addresses the importance of inner harmony as a means to promote external peace, because “the destruction of [our neighbors] only results in the destruction of [ourselves].”  The film includes a question and answer session, which results in candid responses from His Holiness on topics such as the difficulty of converting patience from an idea into a state of being, the challenges of remaining hopeful in today’s violent world, and achieving inner peace in the chaotic environs of New York City.
“The power of compassionate motivation can change the world, and I think you see that in the Dalai Lama. The effect this man has on almost anyone he meets or any situation he finds himself in, the room is transformed- enemies hug each other,” says Richard Gere, whose Healing the Divide Foundation co-produced His Holiness’ visit to New York with The Tibet Center.

DVD Special Features include: images from actor/humanitarian Richard Gere's personal photographs set to a musical score by composer Philip Glass;  National Geographic photo montage of Tibet accompanied by singer/songwriter Tom Waits' "Diamond in Your Mind"; interviews with Richard Gere and The Venerable Nicholas Vreeland, director of The Tibet Center; and an excerpt from His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Congressional Gold Medal ceremony in Washington D.C., featuring a touching tribute from the late Representative Tom Lantos (D-California).

His Holiness the Dalai Lama: Peace and Prosperity is a valuable primer for those hoping to achieve peace and inner harmony in their everyday lives, and a vital record for the message of this important spiritual leader. The film was directed by Sian Edwards and executive produced by Mark Bauman for National Geographic Entertainment.
