Buddhist Charities

In our Spring 2010 issue, which contained a special section on Generosity (and Greed), we included spread on Buddhist or Buddhism-related charities and not-for-profits that are doing good work around the world.  We did a second installment for the Summer 2010 issue and are currently working on a third for the August issue. While we are close to complete, we are still open to suggestions.  In fact, we will be doing this every quarter so consider it an open invitation.

Please email charity and not-for-profit recommendations to info@tricycle.com

So far we have covered the Foundation for the People of Burma, Buddhist Global Relief, Himalayan Art Resources (the best way to assist in their efforts is simply to learn about wonderful art), Lotus Outreach, Piyarra Kutta, Buddha Jyoti Himalayan Youth Club Nepal, The Tzu Chi Foundation, Nonviolent Peaceforce, and the Karuna Center for Peacebuilding. Give them a look and if you feel inclined, help!

(PS- Tricycle: the Buddhist Review is also a not-for-profit so feel free to keep us in mind here)

Dear Sir/Madam

I am S P Ranjith Wickramasooriya from Sri Lanka. I am a B.Sc graduate
from a leading university in Sri Lanka. After working as top
management executive in leading private sector companies in Sri Lanka,
I started my own rubber processing plant in 2007. At the beginning it
was a success. But latter part of 2008 due to global economic down
turn i incurred heavy loses. I had to close down my manufacturing in
march 2009 due to death threats and physical abuse by my creditors. I
had a work force of 120 people from plantation area where most of the
poor people live. They all lost their lively hood due to this closure.

Now I living in hiding not to face my creditors. Some filed court
cases against me and police is looking for me . I am running risk of
getting arrested and getting killed in jail.

my total debt is around 8.5 million Sri Lankan rupees. It is around $.
80,000. As such please be kind enough to grant me some financial help
in order to settle my debt and restart my business. Now I do not have
any single cents in my pocket even to fed myself and my spouse. I am
using one of my friend internet shop to contact people all over the
world to get some help

Your prompt and kind attention in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully

I recommend support to HH Lama Dasang Rinpoche and his project to serve the remote and rugged region in Sumin, Sikkim, Northern India. Construction has begun on site but due to lack of funds has slowed. The monastery that is under construction is also going to be used as a school for the local children as well as a medical clinic for the locals in Sumin. Approximately 30 young monks have recently moved onsite into temporary structures until permanent ones are completed. Sponsorship for monks is also needed. Please help support the dharma and social work that is going on there! Thanks so much for considering us! the Sumin Gompa Support Team

Hi Tricycle,

I'd like to suggest a Buddhist non-profit organization for you under the direction of H.E. Jetsun Khandro Rinpohce; Mindrolling International and Samten Tse Charitable Society. H.E. Khandro Rinpohce is not only a rare example of a female Tibetan Lama who teaches in the West, but also a model of putting into action the Buddhist prinicpals of selfless compassion for beings suffering in this world.

Under the umbrella of Mindrolling International and Samten Tse, there are several ongoing projects that are due considersation:

Dekyi Ling Settlement - a Tibetan Community resourse for Tibetans in India;

Funding of Water Wells - funding the building of water wells where there is no regular fresh water;

Tibetan Women's Association - a resource for supporting education, health and hygiene, community living, women's issues and cultural preservation;

Building of Medical Clinics - for communities where medical services have been much needed but lacked infrastructure;

Sponsorship for Students - sponsoring young students for the entirety of their educational careers;

The Hansens Disease Project - food, medical aid, monthly stipend, construction of cleaner houses and environment for those suffering from leprosy.

Please check out the link below for more details of these projects.

Thank you for your consideration.
