Meet the other Panchen Lama
The Chinese government-approved Eleventh Panchen Lama was "warmly greeted by believers" in the Sichuan Province this week, according to the Xinhua News Agency, the official press agency of the government of the People's Republic of China. Christened "the highest leader of Tibetan Buddhism in China" by the government, the Panchen Lama is making a rare public tour this month. This Panchen Lama was chosen by the atheist Chinese Government "in strict compliance with religious rituals and conventions" after the disappearance in 1995 of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima (see image at left), the boy recognized by the Dalai Lama as the next Panchen Lama, who is believed to be under Chinese house arrest. This highly publicized tour, broadcast on state television, may be a sign that he is ready for a more public role.Share with a Friend
