My finger is trying to find the pulse of what my generation is doing with Buddhism in America. It seems to me that the pulse of retreat centers, publications, and advertisements beats to that of baby boom Buddhists. Sure, my college classmates have a cache of imported words like “karma” and “nirvana” and maybe have done a sit or two, but how many Generation Next hard-core Buddhists are out there?

Sometimes, I feel anxious. When the baby boom Buddhists are meditating in their wheelchairs, will there be anyone to be my dharma teacher? Maybe by then, forty years from now, even the dharma of masters in the East will have been watered down by modernity. Will I be reluctant to lend from my dharma bookshelves a worn and dog-eared copy of A Path with Heart because it’s out of print?
