    Letters Summer 2010 Paid Member

    Recapturing the Dark“Turn Out The Lights” by Clark Strand (Spring 2010) was an excellent article! Now we have to figure out how to recapture natural silence. The din of the marketplace in the days of yore—or even the roar of a Roman colosseum—was nothing compared to today’s car alarms, boom boxes, and blaring TVs everywhere. Our neurons would much rather spend their energy being mindful than constantly tuning out the clamor. Milan Kundera once said that in the past, sound stood out from silence and that today, silence stands out from noise.     Transgender BiasPagan Kennedy’s account of Michael Dillon’s quest to become a Buddhist monk (“Man-Made Monk,” Summer 2007), and the bigotry he encountered, hits a tender spot in me. In 2005, having studied Buddhism for ten years, I cut off my hair and aborted my four-year-long transition from male to female to seek ordination as a Gelug monk. Careful research revealed, though, that as a “eunuch” I was ineligible to become even a novice monk. More »

    I Heart Tomatoes Tomatoes and avocados are my favorite fruit (after mangos, that is). Growing up, it was impossible for me to imagine life without them. In fact, in the diary my mother kept about me for the first two years of my life, tomatoes appear prominently as my favorite food. More »

    Letters to the Editor Paid Member

    A BEAUTIFUL SPIRIT I was inspired by Tricycle’s interview with Ani Choying Drolma, the “singing nun” from Nepal (“Topping the Charts for Freedom,” Fall 2009). Ani Choying chose to transform her own childhood pain into a quest to bring joy to Nepali street children. One of her favorite ways to bring happiness to these children who “play in the dust” is to walk the streets and hand-deliver stuffed animals she has gathered from friends. Her beautiful spirit moved me. My young daughter and I put together a box of stuffed animals she no longer plays with and shipped the box to Ani Choying’s organization, the Nuns’ Welfare Foundation of Nepal. I want my daughter to know how fortunate she is and not forget those children who have less than she does. Lisa Richardson, Glendale, CA More »
