Hakuin was not only interested in Buddhism. Many faiths flourished in Japan during his lifetime, and the founders of three are depicted here. From left to right they are: the founder of Taoism, Lao Tzu; Shakyamuni Buddha; and Confucius. Are they tasting wine or vinegar? Perhaps it depends on the taster. The inscription reads:
Three creeds, one creed— One creed, three creeds— After all, what do they come to? Attaining supreme virtue.
