Here we see an old man and a boy by a stream, scrubbing taro roots with two poles and a bucket. For the moment they have stopped working so that the old man can gaze upon the autumn moon, which is often a symbol of enlightenment. Hakuin seems to be suggesting that, whatever task might be at hand, the moon is always present to be experienced.
