Hakuin’s rich, thick, and angular brushwork in this calligraphy forms the Japanese character for “Stability.” The inscription reads,
The ability to stop is the ultimate virtue.
Knowing how to stop results in stability
In a final playful gesture, the trailing stroke along the bottom lends stability to the entire composition, as if it is holding up the inscription.
