Hakuin painted traditional Chinese-style landscapes, often adding his own special touches. The right side of this landscape represents the busy secular world, while the left side represents the more peaceful Buddhist world. Crossing from one side to the other are three blind men—as difficult as it is for blind men to cross a log bridge, that is how difficult the Buddhist path is!
