Kannon (Jap.; Sanskrit: Avalokitesvara) is the bodhisattva of compassion. The poet Hakuin once told his students, “Kannon is the one who perceives and hears the sounds or prayers of all sentient beings.” Kannon watches over a world of suffering and responds swiftly to our cries for help. Meditating alone on a rocky ledge above a lotus pond full of leaves and blossoms, she also symbolizes the harmony of Buddhist practice with nature.
