Daruma, also known as Bodhidharma, was the Indian sage that brought Zen to China in the sixth century CE and is a favorite subject in Zen art. According to legend, he spent nine years meditating in front of a blank wall in a cave without so much as blinking or moving a muscle, epitomizing the determination and dedication needed in Zen practice.
