Tricycle Pilgrimages

Thank you for your interest in Tricycle's pilgrimage to India, In the Footsteps of the Buddha, which will take place from January 8th – January 23rd, 2008. This will be the third, highly acclaimed Tricycle pilgrimage co-led by Stephen Batchelor and Shantum Seth.

On this pilgrimage, twenty-four pilgrims will journey with Stephen and Shantum through the Buddhist landscape. We will travel across the plains of the River Ganges to where the Buddha attained enlightenment (in Bodhgaya), and gave his first teachings (at the Deer Park at Sarnath). We will visit his favorite meditation places such as Vulture Peak in Rajgir, the Jeta Grove at Sravasti (where he spent 24 rainy season retreats), and Kushinagar, where he passed away. We will also visit the sites where the Buddha was born (in Lumbini) and where he spent his childhood (the palace at Kapilavastu),

Besides visiting the places where the Buddha lived and practiced, we will visit the city of Varanasi, sacred to Hindus, where thousands of pilgrims come daily to bathe in the Holy River Ganges, and Nalanda, the famous 5th -12th century Buddhist University. The trip also includes visits to the caves at Ajanta and Ellora, Sanchi, and Agra to see the Taj Mahal.

The pilgrimage is an opportunity to explore areas that few tourists visit and to develop an understanding of contemporary Indian life that, in many ways, has not changed since the time of the Buddha. It is a transformative journey that allows the traveler to touch an ancient culture and civilization and perennial truths, and an inner journey to experience the life of the Buddha for ourselves and an outer journey through a fascinating and mysterious India -- herself a wonderful teacher.
