Tricycle Community Members Respond to Film Club's Being in the World
Our current Film Club movie is Tao Ruspoli's Being in the World, a discussion of what it means to be human, and how to be human, in a world dominated by impersonal technology. The film features interviews with prominent philosophers and footage of remarkable humans: among them, a flamenco guitarist with a beard like Santa Claus and the soul of a true poet, a graceful juggler, and a female chef who whips up food in a hot pink chef's jacket. Who dunnit? That's what Father Ananda, a cop-turned-Buddhist-monk, is trying to figure out in Irish-Thai director Tom Waller's new film Mindfulness and Murder (Sop Mai Ngib in Thai). From the Bangkok Post: Adapted for the screen and directed by Tom Waller, an Irish-Thai producer/filmmaker, the film is adding a new shelf in the menagerie of monk characters in Thai movies. Though not exactly a mind-twisting detective flick of the highest order, the film rides on a moody atmosphere, while its portrayal of the cloistered monastic existence—in good and bad ways—is honest and far from simply flattering. Help Jeff Bridges end childhood hunger
Jeff Bridges graced the cover of Tricycle's Fall 2010 issue, and with his image, we broke a long tradition of Tricycle covers and have not regretted it. In the past we've eschewed celebrity covers, but Jeff is no ordinary celebrity, and I'm not referring to his Academy Award last year and his nomination again this year. I'm referring to the good work he has done and continues to do beyond his professional life. More recently, Jeff has invited us all to take his "No Hungry Kid Pledge," with the goal to end childhood hunger in America by 2015. It's an ambitious goal but one we can help him meet. In recent interviews the stars of the upcoming science fiction movie Tron: Legacy have spoken about the influence that Zen Buddhism had on the making of the film.
