November Film Club: The Tibetan Book of the Dead (Part 2: The Great Liberation)

An ancient source of strength and guidance originating in the spiritual cultures of the Himalayas, The Tibetan Book of the Dead remains an essential teaching for reminding us of this fact and aiding us in dealing with it. Narrated by Leonard Cohen, this two-part series explores the sacred text and visualizes the afterlife according to its profound wisdom. We showed Part 1: A Way of Life in October and are now showing Part 2: The Great Liberation. Part 2: The Great Liberation follows an old lama and his novice monk as they guide a Himalayan villager into the afterlife using readings from The Tibetan Book of the Dead. September Film Club: Brilliant Moon
This month we are offering supporting and sustaining members a look at the documentary film Brilliant Moon: Glimpses of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Brilliant Moon chronicles the life of the poet, writer, and meditation master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, one of Tibet's most loved and respected 20th-century Buddhist teachers. Written and directed by Neten Chokling and narrated by Richard Gere and Lou Reed, Brilliant Moon was filmed in Tibet, India, Bhutan, the United States, and Nepal. The film uses animation, unseen archival footage, photographs, and interviews with Tibetan Buddhist teachers—His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, Matthieu Ricard, Orgyen Topgyal Rinpoche, Rabjam Rinpoche, and Sogyal Rinpocheto—to tell Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche's life story. The Marathon Monks of Mount Hiei
Welcome to the Tricycle Film Club! This month Tricycle Supporting and Sustaining Members will be treated to two films at the Tricycle Film Club, presented in partnership with BuddhaFest Film Festival, June 14-17 in Washington, DC. The first is The Marathon Monks of Mount Hiei, a documentary about the extreme asceticism of running Buddhists in Japan, and the second is Into Great Silence, a documentary about the everyday lives of Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse, high in the French Alps.
