William Harryman of Integral Options Cafe points to this recent article from The Nation (a Thai publication, not the American weekly) on Buddhism’s 2,000-plus years in Thailand. In countries where Buddhism is still quite new, it’s easy to forget that Buddhism was once new to Thailand as well, and that its relationship to Thai culture is a work in progress. In fact, the piece cites Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction as an important new outgrowth of Buddhist meditation. While MBSR isn’t about to replace the tradition of Thai monasticism, there’s some food for thought here on the transnational reach of digital-era dharma.
