Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere, has been hit with its largest earthquake since the 18th century. The epicenter was close to the capital, Port-au-Prince. The suffering there defies the imagination. Haitian authorities say hundreds of thousands may be dead, and “untold numbers” may be still trapped in the rubble.
