Cartwheels in a SariJayanti Tamm (a Tricycle alum) will be reading from and discussing her new memoir Cartwheels in a Sari at the Mercantile Exchange in New York City this Friday, April 17th, at 7 PM. The Mercantile Exchange is located at 17 East 47th Street between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue. Cartwheels in a Sari is the funny and amazing story of Jayanti’s upbringing in the inner circle of Sri Chinmoy’s ashram in Queens, New York, the painful struggle with her family, the guru, and the other disciples, that ensued when she left, and what it’s like to start a new life afterward. Jayanti had been designated the “Chosen One” by the guru before she was born, so leaving forever was particularly difficult. Jayanti now has a great blog about motherhood, the rigors and joys of promoting a new book, and life after the ashram. You can visit her site here. Her blog also describes how East-West Books cancelled her apprearance because they didn’t care for the views expressed in her book, and how she has been criticized and attacked by the remaining members of Sri Chinmoy’s circle. Her courage in facing censorship and threats stands out in every line of her blog and book.
